Join Forces with White Ribbon Alliance Ethiopia! Building a Global Movement, One Ribbon at a Time   The ribbon is dedicated to the memory of all women and children who have died needlessly in childbirth   What is White Ribbon Alliance for Safe Motherhood & Newborn Health? A global coalition of individuals and organizations promoting awareness of the need to make pregnancy and childbirth safe for all women and newborns in every corner of the world.  Since its creation in Washington, D.C. 1999, can you believe that there are 73 member countries and 12 national secretariats dotting globe?  In Ethiopia, WRA was launched in 2003 and we are very pleased to count 13 members of the core working group and over 125 members!    Why is the White Ribbon the symbol for the Alliance? In some countries, white represents mourning, while in others it is the colour of hope and purity.  Maternal death impacts family unit, workforce, social fabric and psychological wellness of a place.   Why an eye on maternal health in Ethiopia? For the time being, safe motherhood is a topic neither widely understood nor articulated in this country.  There are a variety of explanations for this, and WRA and its members commit themselves to breaking the silence, framing the issues in human rights and social justice contexts, making motherhood health understood by the public and decision-makers.    Consider the magnitude of the problem in Ethiopia:
25 000 women a year die for the same reasons 71 women a day die because of pregnancy-related difficulties 500 000 women a year suffer problems & disabilities from pregnancy 2% of rural Ethiopians have access to trained birth attendants Highest maternal death rate in the world after India 1 in 3 pregnancies are voluntary terminated in unsafe conditions Lifetime risk of maternal death: 1 in 9 in Ethiopia versus 1 in 7 770 in Canada.  A woman in Ethiopia is 200 times more likely to die from pregnancy and childbirth than a woman in the United Kingdom.     These deaths are unacceptable, unnecessary and preventable!
